Jim Causley leads the Widecombe Wassail
Help revive an ancient tradition in the Jubilee Orchard with the Widecombe Singers on Tuesday 30th January at 7.30pm
On Tuesday 30th January, come along to the Widecombe Jubilee orchard for a Wassail evening at 7.30pm. Wassail is an ancient tradition in an apple orchard where traditional songs are sung, plenty of noise is made, all to ward off any evil spirits and wake the trees from their winter slumber.
The Widecombe singers will be gathering at 7.30 pm in the Orchard with the renowned Devon Folk Singer Jim Causley - and we hope some other local musicians -to sing Wassail songs and play traditional music.
Cider and apple drinks will be available, cash donations gratefully received .
Please bring torches, cash, warm clothing, stout footwear for uneven ground and something to make a noise with to chase out the evil spirits ie saucepan lids, whistles… if you would like to bring burnt toast to dip into cider to throw on the new trees, in an ancient wassail tradition, please do bring some!
In the event of rain, we will meet in the orchard for a short ceremony and then retire to the Church House for music and singing.
The Jubilee Orchard is run by a team of volunteers in the village. If you are interested in helping with any maintenance of the orchard, helping with events, being involved in other ways - or if you have any ideas for future events in the Orchard please speak to one of the volunteers on the night.
For more information on this event, please speak to Philippa Gimlette or contact her via comments below or on the Rolling Along website.
