Widecombe History Group's Programme of Events for 2025 - 2026
The Widecombe History Group's programme for the season May 2025 to April 2026 is now available!
We have ten talks in the coming year covering a variety of topics such as the history of the Land Girls, the Military on Dartmoor to wildlife on Dartmoor and Dartmoor myths and legends. Our talk in January 2026 is again a lunchtime affair at the Old Inn.
Two meetings this year will feature films. “Dartmoor Calling” will be shown in August. This film from the Dartmoor Preservation Society covers the history of the people who saved Dartmoor from development in the 1950s, and the current work today; and in February a couple of short archive films will be shown
On August 4th we hold our History Day in Church House. There are exhibits from some of our members, village walks from our Chair Terry French, with tea and home-made cakes in the garden. We will also be at the Fair in September in the Heritage Tent.
Before either of these events we will be holding a Coffee Morning in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance on May 19th, followed by our AGM. Please consider popping in and supporting this life saving organisation by scoffing on homemade cakes!
We have five daytime outings on offer during the Spring and Summer…
… and this year we’re offering two evening outings for those of you who cannot make it during the day :-
Guided walk led by Terry French from Cold East Cross to Buckland Beacon. Friday August 15th at 6:30 pm
Walk around Chudleigh led by the local History Group. Friday August 29th at 6:30 pm
And lastly the popular Village Walks with Terry French. Five dates during the summer, plus also available on History Day. See our previous article Walks Around Widecombe for some videos of Terry in action!
Hardcopies of the programme are available at our monthly meetings, held on the first Wednesday of the month at Church House. Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30 start.
