Women on the Home Front 1939 - 1945
Widecombe History Group's April presentation is by WHG member Martin Cherrett who talks on the "official pictures" of women in Britain during World War II.
Martin Cherrett write and edits a daily substack devoted to events in World War II. He spends a lot of time researching obscure images from the archives. He originally suggested he might talk about the war in Devon, but then decided that a more interesting subject was Women on the Home Front, covering the whole of the country.
The Government went to great lengths to record the routine activities of many citizens during the War, and the Ministry of Information went to special lengths to photographs women in a variety of roles during the war.
During his researches Martin has uncovered hundreds of these images languishing in the archives, most of them never published. His talk on Wednesday 3rd April will be a tour of a wide range of these images.
Widecombe History Group regularly meets on the first Wednesday of every month in Church House, Widecombe. Doors open at 7:00pm for a 7:30 pm start - and the talks are open to all. £3 entry with free refreshments after the talk.
